The Death Valley Germans: A Desert Mystery Turned Tragedy
In the sweltering July heat of 1996, a young German family of four vanished without a trace in Death Valley National Park. Egbert Rimkus, a 34-year-old engineer, his son Georg, girlfriend Cornelia Meyer, and her 4-year-old son Max were adventuring across the Southwest—until they weren’t.
Their minivan was later found abandoned deep in the desert, far off any safe path. It would be years before searchers uncovered the remains. No one knows why they veered so far off course.
Respect to the families who endured. May their memory echo as a warning.
